Architectural Record described Miami’s distinctive parking structure, 1111 Lincoln Road, as “a robust house of cards.” Parking garage as party space? The location has proved so popular that it has even been rented out for weddings and fashion shows. Instead of designing the parking lot as something strictly utilitarian, architects Herzog+de Meuron approached it as a piece of sculpture. In keeping with other architects including Frank Lloyd Wright and Louis I. Kahn, who had loftier visions for the building type, Herzog+de Meuron recognized the opportunity to create a significant landmark–and have succeeded in doing so.
