In a riverside neighborhood in downtown Rochester, NY, Annex Mills transformed a block of vacant buildings in hazardous condition into affordable rental housing. The three-story brick buildings with continuous gabled roofs were originally constructed in 1845-55; they are Rochester’s only surviving complete block of this once-common building type. Prior to restoration, roof leaks had caused partial collapse of some sections of the roofs and floors, and mold, asbestos, and lead paint added to the hazardous conditions. Restoration began in 2010 and was completed in 2011. The project took advantage of state and federal low income and historic tax credit programs, and achieved New York State Homes and Community Renewal green building standards. Annex Mills has helped bring new life to the High Falls section of Rochester.
